Ms. Muay spent her career directing animation, drawing storyboards for LEGO and Warhammer, and illustrating children's books before she ever stepped into an NAC classroom. She teaches art the same way now: real technique, broken down small enough for a nine-year-old to use on a lump of clay.

Ms. Muay built her career as a professional artist before becoming NAC's art teacher. She has worked as a producer and 2D animator on animated series including Jataka Tales 10 Barami, Tomo Bear, and Papa Panda, drawn storyboards for international brands including Warhammer, LEGO Friends, LEGO Nexo Knights, LEGO City, and Bear Teapot, and illustrated children's books while teaching character design and drawing at universities in Thailand.

Turning any character into spheres, cones, and cylinders

The technique Ms. Muay uses is the same one professional animators use to build a 3D character from scratch. She calls it geometric scanning: look at any character, break it down into basic shapes, then build it back up piece by piece. Her students have used it on Pikachu and on original blue slime royalty, sketching the steps on an iPad before ever touching the clay.

The results looked nothing alike, which was the point. Given the same five shapes and the same steps, one student built a crab, another built a tiny bunny in a costume, and one decided a hamburger deserved a birthday candle.

One whiteboard, a room full of Totoros

For a lesson on proportion and shading, Ms. Muay sketched a step-by-step Totoro on the whiteboard, the same character breakdown she uses for any illustration: basic circles first, then ears, face, and belly markings layered on top. Students worked from the same reference and the same steps.

What came back ranged from careful pencil outlines to fully painted pieces with their own color choices, proof that the same lesson can produce a room full of completely different artists.

None of what happens in Ms. Muay's classroom is watered down. The steps are the same ones she used directing animation and building storyboards for LEGO and Warhammer, just resized for a student holding clay for the first time. That is, as much as anything, what an NAC art class is supposed to look like.
